Boy Scout Troop 638
Boy Scout Troop 638 was formed over 17 years ago, and remains under the very capable leadership of Tom Sikes and Eva Yoder.
The troop meets weekly at the Sedalia Center to organize their activities and plan projects. You will see the Boy Scouts at all of the Sedalia Center festivals, keeping the grounds neat and selling sodas and bottled water to our visitors. In return for their clean-up efforts before, during, and after Sedalia events, the Scouts are assured of being the sole providers of sodas and bottled water. Through this arrangement, they are able to raise funds for their membership registration, shirts, handbooks and awards, camping equipment, and camping and project expenses.
This very successful organization has produced 20 Eagle Scouts during their existence. The Scouts have given back to the Center, as well, finding opportunities on the premeses to perform the tasks and build the projects needed to earn their Eagle ratings. Some of their past projects have included:
- Construction of an elevated observation (judge's) stand for use during Sedalia events
- Construction of two cabinets used to house sound boards during Sedalia events
- Construction of picnic tables and benches, flower boxes, entrance-way, and swing in the Matthew Jordan Brown Walk of Poems
- Parking lot improvements (gravel and railroad tie placement)
- Free-standing bulletin board near the baseball field
- First (of two) chair storage cabinets in the pavilion
- Service projects for the Hunters for the Hungry
In preparation for their Troop Reunion Party in December, 2008, the organizing committee counted 75 Scouts who have belonged to the troop during their history, and the number of local young men who have had the benefit of Troop 638 membership is now up to 80. The Sedalia Center is very privileged to be the sponsoring organization for Troop 638.
In 2009, the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust provided funds so that the Sedalia Center could purchase a new, more efficient heat pump for the room used by the Scouts. We are very grateful to the GLCT for their donation, allowing the Scouts to continue to meet at the Center in comfort all year around.
