Once again, Bluegrass at Sedalia celebrates the beginning of summer in singularly spectacular fashion – with three nights of high, wild, and lonesome music in the foothills of the Blue Ridge. Thursday’s Bluegrass Band Contest invites local and regional bands to show Central Virginia what they’ve got. The prize is a cash award and a set on the stage as part of Saturday’s lineup. This is a chance to cheer on your special favorite, and to become acquainted with regional talent that you haven’t seen before.

If any bands in the Bedford, Roanoke, or Lynchburg area would like to enter the Bluegrass Band Contest on Thursday, June 20, contact Junior Zirkle at 549-297-3651 or 434-944-0072.

Friday’s headliner, Kody Norris and the Watauga Mountain Boys, needs no introduction to Bluegrass lovers. Sedalia is proud to present such quality entertainment as this band supplies. Come see one of the best Bluegrass bands anywhere live, in Big Island, from the comfort of your lawn chair. On Saturday, the show begins midday and goes on till the noise curfew, mostly on the power of the Bluegrass Brothers, those hard-driving men in the big white hats.

Throughout the day on Saturday, be sure to check your program and keep an ear open to announcements so that you can attend the free pickin’ workshops that are scheduled. These workshops are open to all. Bring that mandolin you haven’t touched in a year and sit down with the young man who’s been practicing every spare minute for a session with a seasoned player who has volunteered his or her time to help you progress in your playing. Rumor has it there will be a flat footin’ class this year!

Those workshops help to show the personal pleasures of sharing the music that are built in to Bluegrass at Sedalia. To get to the heart of the matter, settle into a campsite for the full three days, where you can pick all day and deep into the night. Visit with old friends, make new ones – and find new pickin’ partners! Camping is a great way to remember that summer nights are meant to be savored, outdoors, with shared suppers, shared music, and stargazing.

The Sedalia Café will be open during festival hours for attendees and for campers who just don’t feel like firing up that grill. Bluegrass at Sedalia is a family-friendly event; alcohol is permitted only within the camping area. Pets are permitted in the camping area so long as they remain within the camping area and you ensure that they will not be in or pose any danger. No coolers or pets are permitted within the festival area. Use of Sedalia’s restroom facilities is included in the camping fee – and we’ve just installed on-demand hot water! Camping fees are detailed above.

Start the summer right: Come out to Bluegrass at beautiful Sedalia, ringed by the mountains, and let the mountains ring!
